PUFFIN 38 (41' LOA with stern platform lowered)
A "no frills" low cost ocean passagemaker for fun and escape. Same seaworthiness and interior as our 41' DD-382. Two versions, a Sedan and the flush deck pilothouse S-Cape. The PUFFINS, S Cape flush deck and Sedan, are an attempt to address the middle class ocean cruisers that have been seriously priced out of today's market. When George and I first got into building Ducks our customers were police, fireman, retired educators, small business owners, and retired working folks with some money usually from increased house value or inheritance. We are concerned that current economic conditions mean we are no longer addressing that market. The new "no frills" PUFFINS use easy to repair commercial workboat coatings. The low cost S Cape is designed for safe world cruising, to escape the daily grind and, increasingly, for getting away from political or weather turmoil.
While the LOA is shorter the interior space has similar dimensions (actually a bit bigger), seaworthiness, speed and fuel capacity as our 41' Diesel Duck 382. Some pictures attached. The main changes on the exterior are 1) a large folding stern platform (bigger than the 382's and good protection in the up position from stern boarders), 2) a return to George's proven external rudder shaft, which allowed the stern fuel tank to move into the boat, and 3) the single large balanced "dhow" jib for good sailing with easy operation. Note, the folding platform allows the total length to be about 38 feet so shipping costs are cut in half as a flat rack can be used. Also, as George points out, she will fit in a low cost under 40 foot berth, pretty much found everywhere. Using "no frills" construction, less teak and stainless and commercial ship coatings, we can sell the PUFFINS for about 1/2 the price of similar vessels with the same equipment., sail assist rig included. It has the similar fuel and electrical systems like the 382 and a complete galley and anchoring system.
The PUFFIN SEDAN is built on the same hull and is primarily for coastal, river, canal and in season ocean passages. However, George Buehler and I both agree that the sedan concept, with large windows and decks that can trap large water volume's, should not be used for serious cross ocean passages.
The PUFFINS include a lot of standard features that are optional on other yachts, see below. I really believe the PUFFINS are twice as seaworthy and half the price of similarly sized and equipped trawler yachts.
