In recent years, advances in technology have led to dramatic improvements in performance. Offshore multihulls, Open 60s and Volvo racers have smashed all records and set the standards of ocean-going speed to new and incredible levels.

The secret of these racers' speed potential lies in a new technology developed around two materials: CARBON fibres and EPOXY resin. When resin systems are combined with reinforcing fibres such as carbon, exceptional properties can be obtained. The resin matrix spreads the load applied to the composite between each of the individual fibres and also protects the fibres from damage caused by abrasion and impact.

These modern materials give a stronger and stiffer boat and are the key factor in the dramatic increase in performance of today’s racing boats. The use of these exotic materials is the main price-influencing factor (together with the carbon rig) but the only way to lower displacement, bringing easy handling and high performance.

For this reason, these materials have, until now, only been available to those with a one-off budget. But now, Shipman has made a series of important developments in the design and building process to enable the production of a high-tech, high-performance yacht at moderate cost. All Shipman carbon yachts incorporate these new techniques to redefine cruising performance without compromising safety or durability.



Carbon fibre is produced by the controlled oxidation, carbonisation and graphitisation of carbon-rich organic precursors which are already in fibre form. The most common precursor is polyacrylonitrile (PAN), because it gives the best carbon fibre properties, but fibres can also be made from pitch or cellulose.

Variation of the graphitisation process produces either high strength fibres (@ ~2,600°C) or high modulus fibres (@ ~3,000°C) with other types in between. Once formed, the carbon fibre has a surface treatment applied to improve matrix bonding and chemical sizing, which serves to protect it during handling. Carbon fibres are usually grouped according to the modulus band in which their properties fall. These bands are commonly referred to as: high strength (HS), intermediate modulus (IM), high modulus (HM) and ultra-high modulus (UHM). The filament diameter of most types is about 5–7µm. Carbon fibre has the highest specific stiffness of any commercially available fibre, very high strength in both tension and compression and a high resistance to corrosion, creep and fatigue.


The large family of epoxy resins represent some of the highest performance resins of those available at this time. Epoxies generally outperform most other resin types in terms of mechanical properties and resistance to environmental degradation, which leads to their almost exclusive use in aircraft components.

As a laminating resin, their increased adhesive properties and resistance to water degradation make these resins ideal for use in applications such as boat building. Here, epoxies are widely used as a primary construction material for high-performance boats or as a secondary application to sheath a hull or replace water-degraded polyester resins and gel coats. The term ‘epoxy’ refers to a chemical group consisting of an oxygen atom bonded to two carbon atoms that are already bonded in some way.


New design concepts, new materials and cutting-edge engineering have been applied to achieve performance, strength and quality. Industrial techniques borrowed from aerospace and automotive areas lead to better engineering, better functionalities and controllable, repetitive and reliable quality of structural parts and systems. At the same time, the owner gets an attractive package and a high degree of customisation. The key concepts behind the design and engineering choices are simplicity, reliability and easy/low maintenance of the yacht. In this area, we have feedback from thousands of yachts built to our designs over the past 20 years.

Finite element (FE) calculation methods were used to study stress areas and optimise fibre orientation, laminate weights and structures using high security factors, much larger than those used for Open 60 or Volvo boats.

Computational Fluid Hydrodynamics (CFD) allowed the optimisation of the flow along the hull and around appendices, to find the best configuration of drag, lift, stability and control. The hulls are not designed to any rule but more to be clean and balanced, fast, seakindly and forgiving under all conditions.

All 3D-design, to automotive or aerospace standard, enables perfect geometry definition and control and a parallel development process using the expertise and experience of numerous design/engineering groups worldwide at the same time.


Shipman carbon yachts are built with revolutionary production boatbuilding methods.

The new award-winning SPRINT technology from SP Systems enables a one-shot construction. The epoxy resin is in gel form and enclosed between two layers of fibers which permit evacuation of air trapped between the layers by means of vacuum. The void content achieved is under 1% and the fiber content close to 60%. Typically, with a common hand lay-up process as widely used in the boat-building industry, a limit for fiber content is approximately 30–40%.

A high temperature oven is used to produce a controlled 24 hour, 90 degrees C curing cycle. The curing process is computer controlled and seven temperature gauges in the laminate and molds permit perfect control of the prescribed temperature curve. During the process, the epoxy resin melts, infuses the surrounding fibers and cures to final hardness.

The hull and deck of every Shipman boat are chemically bonded, and the hull and the upper flanges of the bulkheads are chemically bonded to the deck using Spabond 345, an epoxy-based adhesive. Once this operation is cured, the final stiffness of the boat is achieved.

All main bulkheads are structural and built in female molds using the same technology as the hull and deck: carbon fibers, epoxy resin and a high-density core, vacuum bagged and oven-cured. The structure is made in female molds, laminated using Sprint and, after oven-cure, bonded to the hull with Spabond 345 material.

A keel structure with longitudinal girders forms a strong and stiff backbone of the boat. A stiff boat is not only safer, easier to handle but also much faster and more forgiving, enabling more power transfer and control from the rig, which is best noted in higher overall and VMG speeds.
