The name Hallberg-Rassy has long been associated with yachts having the capability to sail anywhere, taking their owners to far off destinations in style and comfort. The Hallberg-Rassy 53 Mia Bella Principessa is just such a boat. Eighty-eight of these HR53s were built from 1992 through 2006. With hydraulic genoa, staysail and mainsail furling, bow thruster and electric primary and mainsheet winches, she is easily sailed short-handed from the protection of her spacious center cockpit with hard dodger. Below, her practical three cabin layout with roomy main salon comfortably accommodates six for extended cruising. She has the optional teak interior, passageway galley and centerline queen berth in the aft cabin.
Mia Bella Principesa has too much equipment to list in this introduction. Raymarine E120 radar/plotter, ICOM SSB, Westerbeke 8 kW genset, air conditioning, Webasto diesel heat, watermaker, Robertson autopilot with dual drives, Caribe RIB and Yamaha outboard, life raft, washer and dual carbon fiber spinnaker poles. She is ready to cast off her docklines and head for blue water again.
Immediately upon transiting MIA BELLA PRINCIPESSA’S wide companionway steps, one has the feeling that they are aboard a true blue water cruiser. Beautifully finished in teak, her spacious and comfortable interior emits the level of quality craftsmanship that Hallberg Rassy is famous for. Her well conceived three cabin layout will comfortably accommodate six in the forward stateroom, bunk room and aft master cabin. The main salon with dinette and table to starboard and straight settee to port is an extraordinary space to relax with guests at anchor, yet practically designed for comfort offshore. The interior is tastefully upholstered in medium beige colored-Alcantara ultrasuede with blue piping and beige curtains. There are shades on all ports and hatches. Storage spaces throughout the cabins, galley and main salon have been very well executed. Huge storage areas below the cabin sole are accessed through panels which positively lock closed (custom on this boat). Well placed handholds throughout the boat make for easy movement in rough weather.
Starting forward is MIA BELLA PRINCIPESSA’S spacious forward stateroom with V-berth. Surrounding the V-berth along the hull side, ample storage is available in five lockers. Additional storage is available below the berth. There is a large hanging locker to port and two lockers to starboard just aft of the berth. A mirror is hung on the starboard bulkhead.
Aft and to port is the forward head. At the forward end of the compartment is the aft facing Jabsco electric head. A mirror is mounted above on the forward bulkhead. Outboard along the hull side, the counter with sink and single lever faucet runs the length of the space. Storage is available in two lockers below the counter and three lockers with shelves above and outboard. A teak grate covers the floor. Aft is the separate shower stall with articulating shower head on a vertical track. The vessel’s washing machine is located outboard.
Across the passageway to starboard is the bunk room. Two bunks outboard along the hull side provide excellent sea berths. Three lockers outboard of the top bunk and a large hanging locker at the aft end of the cabin are available for storage. Reading lamps are located over each berth and natural light and ventilation are provided by two opening ports and an opening hatch.
MIA BELLA PRINCIPESSA’S spacious main salon is next aft. To port, the straight settee provides a comfortable sea berth. Outboard, there are four lockers along the hull side and storage space for spares and supplies is available behind the settee seat backs. Across the salon to starboard is a long L-shaped settee that surrounds the beautifully crafted teak table. A flat screen television is mounted on an articulating arm on the forward bulkhead. Outboard above the settee are five large lockers along the hull side. Behind the hinged settee seatbacks is additional storage space. Lee clothes are fitted at each settee. There are reading lamps located at the fore and aft ends of both settees. Two handrails run the length of the cabin overhead and numerous other handholds are available around the cabin. Hella turbo fans are located aft between the galley and nav station and the main salon.
The nav station is at the starboard aft end of the main salon. With a wide bench seat and large lift-top table, the navigator’s seat is a comfortable spot whether reading charts on the night watch or sitting and conversing with guests while at anchor. Locker and storage space is plentiful; two lockers outboard, storage below the seat, five drawers below the table and a deep locker inboard below the companionway stairs. Behind the nav station on the aft bulkhead, two long shelves provide a great space for storage of books and operation manuals.
Moving aft of the main salon through the port side passageway is MIA BELLA PRINCIPESSA’S expansive galley. Corian countertops with teak fiddles run fore and aft along both sides of the passageway. Under the outboard galley counter is the large top loading fridge, Force 10 three-burner propane stove, top loading freezer and a set of five drawers with sliding cutting board. Outboard of the counter, eight sliding door lockers with shelves provide exceptional storage. A GE microwave rests on the top shelf in the forward locker. Aft at the end of the counter is a tall pantry locker with shelves. Along the inboard side, open counter space stretches the length of the galley with the exception of the two bin stainless sink at the center. Below the counter, three lockers provide storage for larger items and cleaning supplies. At eye level above the counter, a series of sliding door lockers runs the length of the galley. Modular slats in the cabinet allow customization of dish storage.
Access to the engine room is through a large door to starboard just aft of the entrance to the aft cabin. A switch near the door turns on three overhead lamps that flood the space with light. Headroom and access to the Volvo diesel, Westerbeke genset and the rest of MIA BELLA PRINCIPESSA’S systems is outstanding – the result of Hallberg Rassy’s mission to create a yacht that is user friendly and easy to maintain even while offshore. Heaters, pumps and filters are all easily accessible.
Further aft is the owner’s stateroom. To port, along the hull side are two large lighted hanging lockers with a small locker above. A sofa bench aft provides a great place to relax and read a book or don sea boots and foul weather gear before leaving the cabin. A shelf with lift top locker is outboard. Three lockers are located above on the hull side. The double berth is slightly offset to starboard from the centerline. Two lockers with shelves are located to port and starboard at the head of the berth. A long bookshelf runs along the starboard hull side. There are three small lift top lockers below. Four drawers below the berth add to the cabin’s storage space. Two additional lockers are located below the mirror and vanity on the forward end of the cabin. There are two reading lamps over the berth and two at the forward end of the cabin. A large Lewmar hatch and four ports add light and ventilation.
The ensuite aft head with separate shower is just forward and to starboard of the aft stateroom. A teak grate covers the floor. The Jabsco manual head faces aft along the forward bulkhead. A counter with sink and single lever faucet is outboard along the hull side. Lockers with shelves are located below the counter and outboard. A mirror is hung on the aft bulkhead. The separate shower stall is forward. An adjustable height articulating shower head is mounted in the forward outboard corner of the compartment. Outboard along the hull side, a large locker provides access to the watermaker.
Constructed in hand laid fiberglass with built in longitudinal and athwartship stringers, MIA BELLA PRINCIPESSA was delivered with a full certification from Germanischer Lloyd. Her deck and hull are completely bonded with overlapping GRP laminate. The keel is bolted with 17 stainless keelbolts. Her rudder is fiberglass with 80 mm stainless rudder shaft and heavy bronze rudder fittings. Her hull is white gelcoat with double blue boot stripes and a blue pinstripe. There is a rubstrake with stainless steel trim just below the pinstripe on the hull side. Decks are teak with a raised bulwark and teak caprail. Scuppers on deck drain below the waterline. Stainless steel “granny” bars with teak steps are located at the mast. There are double lifelines with wide boarding gates to port and starboard. The stainless stern pulpit extends forward to the boarding gates for additional protection and ease of movement around the cockpit and aft deck. Teak handrails run fore and aft along the coachroof. Fifteen windows, five hatches and six dorade vents provide light and ventilation. Aft, two large lockers at the transom provide on deck storage. Additional storage is made available in the large starboard cockpit lazarette. The stern platform with five-rung stainless steel swim ladder is excellent for boarding the tender. Forward, the stainless steel double anchor roller holds a 105 lb CQR anchor. Her 325 feet of chain are retrieved with a Lofrans windlass with up and down foot controls.
In July of 2011 the bottom was soda blasted to bare gelcoat by Cobb's Boatyard in Norfolk to remove excessive buildup of bottom paint. New epoxy barrier coat and bottom paint were applied. The bottom last received two new coats of antifouling paint in January of 2016 at Royal Palm boatyard in Dania, Florida.
MIA BELLA PRINCIPESSA’S spacious, T-shaped cockpit is a safe, comfortable platform offshore. The cockpit is self draining. Seats and cockpit sole are inlaid teak. Custom fit seat cushions are available. Her hard dodger and bimini protect the crew even in the roughest weather. The Whitlock pedestal with 46” stainless wheel also provides a base for the hydraulics, autopilot and engine controls. A Raymarine radar chartplotter is located forward in the cockpit under the hard dodger. Short-handed reefing and sail handling are made simple with hydraulic mainsail and genoa furling, electric primary winches and mainsheet winch. The staysail is mounted on a Lewmar hydraulic furler. Her mainsail is adjusted on a Lewmar traveler track aft of the cockpit.
