Construction Details and Materials
Cedar with cloth/epoxy sheathing - laminated with West System epoxy, comprised of four layers of 1/8" Western Red cedar and an external layer of 1/4" Mahogany hardwood
Deck material - marine plywood with cloth/epoxy sheathing
Tom and Denny were never close growing up. Between Tom being several years older than Denny and the time Tom served in the Marine Corps, they had a hard time finding common ground. You could even say that they had a hard time finding the time to find common ground. However, reunited in retirement, a Nuclear Engineer and a Farmer, found a project that combined their talents and passions.
One Day while thumbing through Wooden Boat Magazine Tom came across Bill Garden’s design for the Captain Blackburn Cutter.Tom fell in love with the design (with a few exceptions). After gaining permission to alter the plan to fit their fancy, a deal was struck between the brothers and constructionensued. Work progressed well for two years or so, but Tom’s wife kept reminding him that they were supposed to travel during retirement. They took a couple years off to do just that and eventually got back to task after the travel requirements were met.
Unfortunately, not long after returning from his travels, Tom suffered a major heart attack. Tom survived but never got back into the swing of things. Momentum slowed, and progress kind of drug on as Denny worked to complete the remaining construction on his own.
Nearly 18 years after viewing the original plan, the boat was finished. From the barn emerged a cold-molded, gaff rigged Cutter built by the Fish Brothers. A work of art, a labor of love. They launched her in 2007 and she floated perfectly on her lines. She far exceeded their expectations in every way. The brothers agreed to name the boat “Pert” after their beloved mother.
Tom and Denny sailed twice together before Tom passed away from heart complications. Pert was his favorite project.
Dennysailed her everywhere from Olympia to Chatterbox Falls. He took great pleasure in sailing her singlehandedly. A stroke in 2012 has left Denny with limited mobility, and he can no longer safely sail.
Pert is back in the barn. She is as perfect as the day she was built, awaiting her next voyage.
