The resounding success of both the Swan 48 and the 60 provided confirmation that their new formula was a winning combination all round. Indeed, soon after their launch both models were proving to be popular for cruising - with a full crew or shorthanded. With the Swan 56, the distinctive characteristics of the third generation of Swans remained - the new boat inherited a sleek hull and slender lines from the start. Her modern, fine entry forward and steeply raked bows followed on quickly, with the beamy flat sections aft providing yet another family resemblance to the new age of Swans. But Frers went further, stretching her waterline length and reducing her overhangs to make her as potent - yet seakind - as he thought appropriate. In the course of the building process, opportunities were taken to incorporate high-tech materials and lighter construction techniques. After two years of development and building for the first hull, many consider the Swan 56 Regatta to be one of the most powerful models in the range, with options for a high aspect ratio, deep draft bulb keel and a high performance fractional rig.
