The Swan 40 represents one of the most extensively researched Nautor projects. From the development of her sleek underwater lines and high performance foils to a revaluation of what really makes a comfortable, elegant, and modern cruiser, the design team examined every detail of design to create a truly modern and unmistakable Swan. The Swan 40 is equally at home coastal cruising with the family as she is crossing oceans shorthanded. One example of the thought in her design is the manner in which her practical and secure, deep aft cockpit works with her comfortable and spacious aft cabin, which even has its own en suite head. Further examples are her saloon, galley, and dedicated navigation station that combine the sumptuous surroundings typical of a Swan yacht with the inevitable practicalities of life underway. Construction is of custom woven glass - aramid reinforcements that reduce the hull weight while achieving sufficient strength and stiffness. The structural backbone is provided by a dip-galvanized square steel section that runs through the length of the saloon and carries the primary loads generated by the rig and keel. Her bulkheads, longitudinal and transverse members, and parts of her interior are laminated into the hull before she is released from the mold to ensure accuracy and rigidity. A composite rudder stock helps keep weight out of her ends and enhance her performance under way. Her 35 hp engine is one of the quietest and vibration free in her class, due to the use of high quality sound-deadening materials.
