Builder; Columbia Sailing Yachts
Designer; William H. (Bill) Tripp
Approximately 160 have been built. This model is believed to be Hull # 152.
Columbia Yachts in Southern California were one of the early builders of fiberglass sailing yachts and Kailani was one of the last to be built of the company's 43 foot cutters.
Bill Tripp was the designer of the 43 and he also designed the Columbia 50 and the Hinckley Bermuda 40. All were highly regarded in their day and to this day as well.
The Columbia 43 was built to compete with the at the time very popular Cal 40. The Columbia 43 provides a good turn of speed and is a comfortable cruiser both in terms of living aboard and in terms of sailing on the seas. She's got a keel stepped mast, has a fin keel with a spade elliptical rudder, so is not only seaworthy but will provide exceptional performance while sailing as well as under power.
Many fiberglass boats in the day were built with chopper guns and sprayed matrix fibers. The Columbia 43 was one of the first to utilize hand layup of heavy layers of fiberglass cloth and resin resulting in a strong and stiffer laminate. This method remains in use today as a solid and reliable method of building strong hulls among many modern builders.
The Bill Tripp design has a sleek appearance with classic bow and overhangs typical of the era, an extraordinarily uncluttered deck and a rounded doghouse, giving the yacht a contemporary appearance.
She has a solid fiberglass hull, keel stepped mast and the deck has been replaced and is solid fiberglass.
Enter the companionway down a few steps. Beneath the steps is the Yanmar Diesel fresh water cooled engine. To port is the galley. Starboard is the dinette which folds down to create an additional double berth. Aft of the dinette cushion is a double quarterberth, which is currently being used as storage.
Step down one step over the beautiful recent wood floor to the main salon. Both port and starboard has a wide settee with storage behind above and beneath. Each berth has a seat back which when deployed, serves as a second bunk/pilot berth. This area can sleep four.
Forward to port is the large navigation table with storage and electronics. To starboard is a spacious head with nearly new toilet, storage and shower area.
Forward is the owner's berth, which is a V berth and has extraordinarily thick foam cushions, plenty of storage and access to the chain forward.
