1968 Fully restored Thistle Class Sailboat
This is a professionally rebuilt Douglass & McLeod Thistle Class Sailboat. She has Flag Blue Awlgripped topsides, a red boot stripe, and a white Awlgripped interior (moondust color) with added non-skid. Sail number is #2287. She also comes with a trailer, a relatively new fitted complete Sunbrella boat cover, and North and Quantum Sails. A fun boat!

A professional boat builder restored this Thistle for his own use. No details were left out. The boat has not been raced since rebuilding.
The boat was completely stripped to bare hull, including the removal of all hardware, wood, seats/tanks were cut out. The old interior gel coat was removed. Next the centerboard trunk was reinforced with fiberglass tabbing in stress areas and faired. All stress cracks were repaired using standard marine repair practices. All the old hardware holes were filled with epoxy resin and faired to allow for a fresh start when mounting new hardware. Next the removed seat tanks were sanded down and the underside of the top of the seats was cored with new balsa to stiffen them. Reniforcements were added to the shroud attachment points. The seats were reinstalled into the hull using glass tabbing and epoxy resin. A new flotation tank was constructed for under the back grate using lightweight foam core fiberglass techniques. The entire interior was then sanded and faired. The interior was then gel coated, white. Gel coat was used because of its superior resistance to abrasions and knocks. It also suffers no ill effects if water sits in the bottom of the boat. The same cannot be said for paints. The interior non-skid surfaces were Awlgripped (Moondust) with a non-skid additive.
All new teak grates and rails were constructed and installed, including 45 degree bracing as seen on many Thistles. All joinery was assembled and fitted to the boat with West epoxy. If you look under the teak deck rails you will see a nice radius bead of epoxy running the length of the hull. All teak undersides were coated with three coats of epoxy, and then all teak was coated with six coats of marine spar varnish. It looks beautiful.
The boat was fitted with new blocks, mostly Harken ball bearing type; some are the new Air Blocks that are very nice. The boat also has new Jobmaster Cleats and a new Harken mainsheet traveler system.
The boat is fully rigged and set up with all the controls for racing. The only thing not added was the popular jump cleat spinnaker halyard arrangement for hoisting the spinnaker. This can be added, but I did not intend on racing the boat and it adds a bit more clutter.
The boat has the preferred aluminum black mast and boom, (not the less desirable gold mast). The mast is newer than the boat having been replaced years ago.
The hull topsides are painted in Flag Blue Awlgrip with a red boot top. The botom is painted with VC Teflon Performance Epoxy, which is basically a fast racing bottom that offers no anti-fouling protection but can be wet sanded to a very smooth finish.
The rudder and centerboard are in perfect condition. The tiller is a solid piece of varnished oak and is fitted with a tiller extension.
A new carbon fiber spinnaker pole is included. Under the forward port rail are two custom leather-lined mounts to store the pole.
All running rigging is in new condition and was supplied by Annapolis Performance Sailing.
The boat is fitted with new adjustable hiking straps for all crew positions.
The boat comes equipped with three attachment points for installed for lifting. A custom vinyl coated wire-lifting harness is included.
The trailer is a 1963 Gator trailer with bearing buddies, recent bearings, and relatively fresh paint. It has good tires and a spare. It has LED lights. It has not been in the water since being rebuilt. The boat is hoisted from the trailer and launched at the owner's sailing club. There is an additional light board that mounts to the rear of the boat. The light board incorporates the rear mast support for carrying the rig when the boat is on the trailer. The front of the mast support is buillt into the trailer. Contact areas are covered in leather hide to protect the mast.
A boat cover is included which is made of Sunbrella water resistant fabric. It was designed as a complete boat cover that can be fitted to the boat with the mast stepped and the boat on the trailer.
The boat is set up for either racing or day sailing, and as such, it comes with two sets of sails. One set is from North Sails for day sailing which includes a Main, Jib, and an older spinnaker. The North Main has a reef and also has mast slides to help keep the sail under control when day sailing. The owner often sailed with just his wife. Using a mainsail with slugs kept things a bit neater and under control since the slugs keep the main attached to the mast unlike a boltrope. Also fitted for day sailing is a set of lazy jacks and a Boomkicker. This allows the main to drop right onto the boom when it's lowered and the Boomkicker support the boom so you can tighten the mainsheet and all is organized and out of the way. Obviously, for racing, you can simply remove these. Set up for day-sailing the boat will zip around with main and jib averaging 6-7 knots. Alot of fun especially when keeping up with larger boats. Downwind, flying the spinnaker with the centerboard up, the boat will sit up and plane. Very fast, and very Fun. Also, a set of Quantum practice racing sails is included. They are in excellent condition.
This is one of the best-looking, better-equipped Thistle's in the country. One would have to spend significantly more to restore themselves. A new Thistle would easily cost double this amount. Official Thistle Class Association Certificate.
