Built in 1965 by Hillyards, This 20 ton ketch was built to order for a gentleman who specified a higher quality boat than Hillyards normally built, which included the use of teak in all of the coachroof and dog house coamings, plus a taller rig for increased performance. Extensive and thorough refit in present ownership including new rig, engine and systems. She is now a first class yacht, fully equipped with everything required for long distance cruising or comfortable live aboard. It would be hard to find a better Hillyard or a more comfortable and spacious yacht of this length.

Hillyard’s Yard was probably the most successful yacht builder in UK until the advent of GRP. David Hillyard started building small yachts in the 1920’s and quite early in his career hit on the centre cock-pit design which became his trademark. The classic Hillyard is a long keeled yacht with canoe stern and short over-hangs with a deep, safe centre cock-pit, often sheltered by an open backed dog-house.
The centre cock-pit allowed a three compartment lay-out with an aft cabin, a midships saloon cabin and a forward cabin - rare to have more than 1 separate sleeping cabin except in much larger yachts.
Safety and comfort were more important than speed to his clientele and the yachts became very popular especially with families and cruising people.
He built the design in various sizes from the most popular 30’ 9 tonner, the successful 36’ 12 tonner and a few larger yachts built to specific request. Individual requests were catered for and there were variations on the theme. Most were round bilged, a few built with a chine to increase the cabin sole area and therefore internal volume, some with steel plate bilge keels bolted on and at the end of the period a few built with a transom stern instead of the standard canoe stern.
This is one of the larger Hillyards and probably one of the best. She was built for an experienced owner (his fourth Hillyard) who specified all teak brightwork 9(unique for post-war Hillyards, taller masts and improved interior joinery.

Typical centre cock-pit Hillyard design with a long keel, canoe stern, powerful high bow and a chine to the bilge.
Planked in 1.25” mahogany, all copper fastened to 3.5” x 2” sawn oak frames at 35”c with two 2” x 2” @ 13” steamed intermediate timbers.

Long external iron ballast keel. Internal lead trimming ballast.
The deck is laid in T&G pine set fore and aft on the fore and after decks and laid diagonally on the side decks. All sheathed in Cascover (a nylon cloth with Cascophene rescorcinol glue) and painted light grey.
Heavy teak rubbing strake all round the deck edge with 4” teak toe rail and capping over.
Typical Hillyard safe, strong, high galvanised gas pipe railings all round with a gate each side.
The deck structures consist of a centre cock-pit with a fixed open backed dog-house over, coach-roof forward up to the main mast over the saloon cabin and coach-roof aft over the aft cabin. The forward coachroof was renewed in 2012.
The coach-roof coamings and dog house are built in teak. The coach-roof decks are in T&G pine, epoxy sheathed with teak grab rails each side.
All new toughened glass windows, opening sections each side of the fwd coach-roof, 2 small rectangular fixed lights each side in the after coach-roof.

Wheel steering on cables from the port side traditional spoked wheel in the cock-pit to the usual Hillyard galvanised quadrant on the rudder stock under the aft deck, accessed through the aft cabin.
Bermudian ketch rig on varnished rectangular section built spruce masts, re-glued in 2012.
The main mast is stepped in a galvanised tabernacle on the deck immediately forward of the forward coach-roof.
The mizzen mast is stepped in a smaller galvanised steel tabernacle mounted on a hardwood block on the aft coach-roof.
All new s/s standing rigging and rigging screws set up to external galvanised steel chain plates, regalvanised and refastened 2012.
The main mast has twin lowers and cap shrouds round single varnished spreaders. Removeable inner forestay for staysail/storm jib.

New Tri colour light and VHF ariel at the masthead.
Cleats on the tabernacle and on the mast.
Main boom, rectangular section varnished spruce with slab reefing, sheeted to a car on an aluminium track across the aft coach-roof with modern blocks, jammer cleat on the lower block, all accessible from the cock-pit.
Bronze track on the forward face with traveller ring to take the spinnaker pole.

Sheeted to the stern post head, the tail led back in to a cleat on the tabernacle.
Twin lowers and cap shrouds, all in new s/s wire with s/s bottlescrews to external galvanised chain plates (regalvanised and refastened 2012).
Single spreaders and jumper strut to stiffen the upper section of the mast.
