THE TUGBOAT KENNEBEC
Kennebeck was built in 1956 to tow logs on Wyman Lake as part of the historic logging industry. Logs were sluiced down hillsides then towed across lakes on their way to port cities on the coast. Kennebeck performed her roll well for 20 years and was part of the final log drive in 1976 (see attached photo and info). The photo shows the Kennebec towing 2 acres of logs – just about the size of one and a half football fields.
After her retirement from the lake she was moved to the coast where she continued to work in the logging industry; this time towing barges loaded with logs from the islands to the town of Rockland.
Her next role was as a training vessel at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. When she used as a training vessel. Current owners bought her in 2003 and spent three summers converting her into a live-aboard. The electrical and 12 volt systems were professionally done and we had safety rails added before she was launched and brought to Rockland for cruising in the local area. She is now for sale, and stored out of the water at Journey's End Marine on Tillson Ave in Rockland, Maine
