MADDY SUE is a classic downeast design designed by one of the forefathers of the Picnic Boat movement. Built in 1932 by renowned Maine boatbuilder Chester Clement, the boat was restored in 2012-2013 at Darlings Boatworks in Charlotte, VT where she currently resides.
Gracing the cover of June 2014 issue of WoodenBoat, the feature article covers the story behind the refit of this classic vessel. The hull lines of this design were recorded by the National Park Service's Historic American Engineering Record after the boat was declared a historically significant boat type related to the very first Picnic Boats. Builder Chester Clement, before his untimely death, mentored Raymond Bunker at his yard at Southwest Harbor Maine who went on to design and build the sought after Bunker and Ellis line of yachts. Clements yard was later bought by Henry Hinckley in 1939 where Hinckley Yachts continue to run it's Southwest Harbor yard today.

Vessel refit was performed by Darling Boatworks in Charlotte, VT 2012-2013
- Steam bent white oak framing
- Hull cedar planked
- Decks- cedar planks plywood sheathed in fiberglass. Painted with Awlgrip and non-skid.
- Cabin, Windshield, and Helm Station - solid varnished mahogany -
- Transom - vacuum bagged lamination of three layers of 6mm marine plywood and 1/4" mahogany veneer
- Mahogany bench for the steering station and matching bench for aft deck built during refit. Design matches those of the ones on display of the model of this yacht on display in the Great Harbor Maritime Museum in Northeast Harbor, ME.
- cockpit sole - re-framed in white oak, and finished in new marine ply sheathed in fiberglass.
- all mahogany rub-rails, toe-rails and taffrails replaced during refit
- Most of old hardware including the helm instruments were able to be reused. 2 new bronze portholes were installed on the forward face of the cabin
- new engine bedlogs
- new shaft bearings
- Rebuilt 1950's vintage Chris-Craft ML, 6 cyl gas - 140 hp. (144 hours since rebuild)
