American Eagle is a 92′ Gloucester Fishing Schooner . She has a rich history. Today she looks and feels like a new boat. Her fair lines, solid timber and tarred rigging are as they were three generations ago when she first went to work in the waters off New England. She was recently designated a National Historic Landmark, and is one of very few sailing vessels licensed for international voyages.

New sails and awning 2013

HULL: Planking: Carvel planked, 2” thick oak ; Frames: Double sawn oak & black locust frames ;Fastenings: Ferrous square cut spikes, galvanized ; Bolting: Ferrous ; Shelf & Clamp: Oak ; Stem: Oak ;Stern post: Oak ;Transom: Short counter stern, Oak planked ;Structural keel: Oak ; Ballast: Internal ballast, lead encased in concrete.

Deck : laid White pine, caulked and paid seams

Bulkheads ; Five compartments: Forepeak, forecastle & galley, midships,main+engine. All watertight bulkhead. Construction: Planked on stanchions . Watertight doors: There is a single steel watertight door with dogs in the bulkhead between galley and midships compartments. All other bulkheads are solid

RI G G I NG AND DECK GE A R

Mast: : (2) solid Douglas Fir spars, oiled finish

Boom: : Main boom is laminated solid Douglas Fir. Fore is solid . Finish: Varnish

Bowsprit :Solid spar, spike bowsprit with simple head rig . Finish: Varnish

Standing Rigging: Shroud construction: 7X7 galvanized wire rope, looped around mast at mast tops . Vessel is rigged with deadeyes and lanyards, except for the bowsprit . Chain Plates: Steel bar stock, bolted to planking .Head rig: Staysail is tacked at a gammon iron that attaches to the stem. Jib is tacked at a cranse iron at the end of the bowsprit.

Sails: Main, fore, staysail, and jib, all sails synthetic “Oceanus” cloth, new in 2013. Made by Nat Wilson . New awning 2013
