Skerry cruisers (or Square metre yachts) are yachts, usually wooden, which are constructed according to the Square metre rule. Originating from Sweden, they were historically most popular in the Baltic Sea, though some classes also saw popularity in other European countries and USA. In Germany they had a specific class and rules and are called Nationalen Kreuzer . As all the Skerry cruisers these boats belong to construction classes, meaning that though the boats are not identical with each other, they are all built according to same formula, making them broadly comparable in size and performance. Most skerry cruisers are slender boats, with low freeboards and tall rigs.
Tuemmler is a very important example of a German Skerry , Nationalen Kreuzer . She was designed and built by the most important german shipyard and one of the most important in the world : Abeking & Rassmussen in 1924.
, Tümmler was built under the rules of a 75 sqm Nationaler Kreuzer and was racing in the twenties till to the WW II. We do not know how succesful Tümmler was, but most of her sisterships which all had the same shape have been very succsessful winners during this time. When the time was over for fleet racing in the 75 sqm Class and Tümmler moved from Berlin to the Baltic Sea they converted the yacht into a 60 sqm Seefahrtskreuzer just by shortening the mast to reduce the sailarea down to 60 sqm. The Seefahrtskreuzer Class was the early beginning of the RORC rating formula and the beginning of Offshore Racing after the WW II. Tümmler was owned at this time by the Seestrassen Wirtschaftsamt in Kiel, the Wirtschaftsamt was in charge of all the marks in the german water teritory. Tümmler was sailed by the cadets every day from spring to fall to educate them in Navigation. The actual owner bought Tümmler as a 60 sqm Seefahrtskreuzer and renovated the hull and put the original Mastheight on.for the 75 sq m class. Very fast boat , able to very important results in the Classic yachts series. Latest result :Winner of 2016 edition of XII Vele Storiche Viareggio .
